Bespoke Kitchen Design Guide | Adding Natural Light
How To Add Natural Light To Your Bespoke Kitchen
We believe the kitchen is the heart of every home. It’s where we gather together to cook, eat and entertain. To celebrate with our friends and spend time with our families. But what if your kitchen doesn’t have enough natural light?
Natural light not only adds to the overall appearance of a room, it can heighten your mood and make you more productive. Great if your kitchen also doubles up as a workspace! Natural light also contributes to a healthier household, helps minimise mould and mildew which like to grow in dark, damp spots and adding natural light sources can even decrease your electricity bills.
One of the best ways to create a beautiful, functional kitchen space that’s filled with light is with a bespoke kitchen. By working with a bespoke kitchen designer you can create a custom-made kitchen to suit your needs. Everything is taken into consideration from the layout of the room to the materials and finishes to achieve the style you want. A bespoke kitchen design will allow you to create a space that feels inviting and comfortable, as well practical for cooking and entertaining.
5 Ways To Add Natural Light To Your Kitchen
The obvious solution to adding more natural light to your kitchen is through windows or skylights. But there are additional ways to increase the perceived lighting by enhancing the light you already have.
1. Windows and Doors
The placement of your windows and doors is a key design consideration in any kitchen. To make the most of the natural light available you’ll want to consider the direction your windows face and the position of the sun at different times of day. You may also want to consider installing skylights, sun tunnels or clerestory windows. These types of windows are located in the roof or along the roofline on the upper part of the wall and will add more daylight without compromising your privacy.
Patio doors, French doors and bi-folding glass doors are a popular choice for introducing more light into kitchen-dining spaces and can help make them feel more spacious. Any external doors with glass panels will also contribute some light and you might even want to consider internal glass panelled doors to let in light from adjoining rooms in your home.
Don’t worry if you are unable to change your windows or install additional ones simply keeping your windows clean and unobstructed will help lighten the kitchen. You also want to avoid heavy drapes or curtains that can block out light, opt for sheer curtains and light fabrics to keep the room bright and airy.
2.Colour Palette
Your choice of colours can have a big impact on how light bounces around your kitchen. Light colours reflect the light so, if you want to make the most of the natural light in your new bespoke kitchen, we recommend choosing a light colour palette. White would be our top choice, but pastel colours also make a great choice to create a bright and airy kitchen space.
White cabinets reflect light from its surface, making your kitchen look bigger and brighter. Using a neutral colour like white also makes a versatile base for any design aesthetic with accent colours and accessories.
A white kitchen island as the central focus in the room will naturally enhance the lightness of the entire kitchen as all light sources will interact with it. Especially if it’s in a direct path of sunlight from a window or skylight.
Painting your doors and window frames white is also an easy way of brightening your kitchen as the incoming light reflects off these surfaces.
But it doesn’t all have to be white surfaces to add brightness to your kitchen. Although dark colours absorb light instead of reflecting it, they can be used to create contrast. By having darker accent colours in some areas of your kitchen the rest of the room will look brighter in contrast.
3.Quartz Worktops
Worktops are one of the most important features in a kitchen. As well as looking good, you want your worktop to be durable, easy to maintain and if you want to make the most of the natural light then you also want a worktop with a reflective surface.
Quartz is an ideal choice, as a natural stone it will reflect light around your kitchen, making it feel brighter and more spacious. Quartz worktops come in a variety of colours and patterns, so you can find a style to suit your design tastes. It’s also a durable material that is easy to maintain, so it’s perfect for busy family kitchens.
You don’t have to stop at worktops, Quartz makes a great material for splashbacks and flooring for style, durability and its light reflecting properties.
4.Reflective Surfaces
Cabinets and worktops are not the only reflective surfaces in your kitchen. Two other design considerations to maximise the light in your kitchen are your backsplashes and appliances. White backsplashes will of course reflect any sunlight coming in through the window but they aren’t always the most practical choice for busy kitchens. Consider adding mirrored splashbacks. Easy to clean and maintain, mirrored surfaces reflect and amplify light, creating an illusion of space, perfect for smaller kitchens.
Choosing appliances with a metallic finish is another way of adding reflective surfaces into your kitchen. The natural sheen of the metal will help the light bounce around the room, especially when placed opposite natural light sources.
5.Biophilic Design
Bring the outdoors indoors with biophilic design. Plants are not only pleasing to the eye, but they also help to purify the air and can make a room feel more calm and serene. If you want to create a light and airy kitchen space, consider adding some plants and greenery. Even a picture of a plant can contribute to the ambiance you are creating.
Air purifiers, organic materials and neutral colour palettes are all ways of adding the benefits of biophilic design to your home.
